Mental Preparation - 6
As If Training
Let’s start with a basic premise, well researched and supported. That is, when we perform imagery vividly (with all our senses) our minds do not know the difference between an imagined and real event.
One technique which is very effective for many people is to use “As If™” thinking and practicing. Whether in business or sports, ever imagine what it feels like to perform “like” someone else? In business, imagine how someone else would handle a situation, a call, a person, a sale. Find a role model and act “as if” you were them handling your situation. What would they say? How would they say it? What would their body language be like? Now model it. Practice it. Become an actor. Take on the characteristics of that person. Or, in a business setting, how do they go about conducting themselves in meetings, stressful or confrontational situations?
In athletics, the same technique can be used. What does your role model look like? What do you think he or she is thinking about as they perform? What rituals do they go through before a competition. Try running “like” someone else. Mimic their posture, arm carry, stride, breathing, foot-strike. You’ll be surprised at the results. This is an excellent way to learn about yourself, as well as others. Since we all have a certain natural running form you may not want to “take on” someone else’s form. I do not believe in making someone run a certain way or change their form unless there is a truly detrimental issue. There is no single perfect running form. This technique may give you insights into how to improve your running.
