Meet Coach Dave
A Personal Note
David
Gunn is a lifetime athlete who started running in 2001. He
is an accomplished rock climber, boatman and runner.
He regularly
competes in races of all distances from 400-meter sprints
to full marathons. David began his running career as a member
of a small, unorganized group of runners that called themselves
the “Rapids”. This group eventually evolved into
a stable group of runners from all over the north valley.
After having tested a number of running coaches and because
of David’s natural leadership abilities, the Rapids
approached David to develop coaching skills to support the
team. To accommodate this request, in 2005, David became a
certified coach through RxRunning, founded by Dean Hebert,
and now organizes and coaches RxRunning Northwest Phoenix.
All members
of RxRunning North have and continue to achieve personal bests
under David’s relaxed style of coaching. David begins
with a personal interview and assessment of the runner’s
abilities and goals. As the runner progresses and improves,
these assessments are repeated. Based on the assessments and
the RxRunning philosophy, David designs individual workouts
to challenge each runner’s level of desire and commitment.
David also coordinates the individual workouts to achieve
a cohesive team approach on and off the track. Because David
is an engineer by trade and education, he provides training
plans and data and race results in an electronic format allowing
him and the runner to analyze their results at a higher level.
David
is a certified AIA track & field official and enjoys devoting
time to both high school and adult track meet officiating.

“Dave
has been a rock for our running group. He supports each
member regardless of his or her ability. Even the slowest
runner in the group feels like a track star.”
“What
I like best about our running group is that we are more
than just a group of runners, we are a spiritual group.
We are connected not only by the many miles of running
but also by a deep commitment to each other as people.
That kind of bond comes from rare leadership.”
